The last thing I need in life is a new TV obsession. I have so many (Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder, Sons of Anarchy, The Fall, Shameless . . . This list could go on and on). I am a certified, bona fide TV junkie. I love the magic of fictional stories (I also write them), but I am a sucker for TV who does not need another show on her list.
Then Being Mary Jane happened. I love Mara Brock Akil (the creator), and she pretty much created the shows I adored in my twenties (Girlfriends, The Game). Being Mary Jane is the show for my thirties. It’s grown-up TV in a world full of cute, as Vulture writer Margaret Lyons so nicely summed up. And while I love cute things, cute TV is not necessarily one of them.
What I love most about Mary Jane is how real she is. We all know a Mary Jane. She’s messy, mean, and not apologetic enough for some of her actions. She’s probably most of us on a bad day.
This is a juicy, grown-up soap. I am so happy the new season started last night! If you’re behind, no worries. Winter is sure to bring us another snowstorm, and now you know what you’ll be binging on!
