Vieques Is For Adventurous Lovers

Last summer I was in search of a romantic destination that wouldn’t be overrun with tourists, was a quick flight from Philly, offered adventure, and not to mention, had stunning beaches. After a few quick clicks on, I found my spot—Vieques, Puerto Rico.

After a three-hour flight to San Juan and a fifteen-minute flight to Vieques, we were officially in paradise. Our hotel of choice was the W Retreat & Spa. With its two private, secluded beaches (and best food on the island), it is a destination all in its own. We could have spent our entire trip here, but we had to be adventurous.

Vieques is home to the largest bioluminescent bay in the United States: Puerto Mosquito. Alas, we’ll have to return to see it (the excursion was totally booked!). We spent our days visiting the neighboring towns of Isabel Segunda and Esperanza.

The highlight for me was our visit to the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge. I’ll never forget the dozens upon dozens of wild horses and three-hundred-year-old trees. And just when you think you’ve captured every moment, you have the breathtaking sunset at the end.

Vieques is also the spot for relaxation. AWAY Spa at the W Retreat & Spa offers tons of treatment options and even hosts yoga classes.

I will certainly be back soon.
